Winter Light
"Winter Light" is an intimate, literary interactive fiction experience about dying with dignity. You are Marcus, a 63-year-old man in the final hours of terminal illness, sitting in your home study as winter evening approaches.
The game takes place in real-time as your mental clarity gradually declines. Examine objects that trigger bittersweet memories: a family photograph from a sailing trip, an empty notebook you can no longer write in, a book of poetry open to Raymond Carver's "Late Fragment." Each interaction reveals layers of a life fully lived—a marriage of thirty-eight years, grown children, simple joys that were everything.
But time is running out. The hospice nurse left you pills—legal, your right, your choice. You can take them now, while you still understand what they mean. You can call for your wife, Sarah, and face this together. Or you can wait, hoping for more time, and risk losing yourself entirely to confusion.
There are no correct answers, only human ones. Every ending is shaped by when and how you choose—or fail to choose. This is a story about agency, love, burden, and what remains when everything else falls away.
Non-traditional, non-combat, puzzle-free. A meditation on mortality presented with literary prose and emotional honesty.
Content Warning: This game deals honestly with terminal illness, medical aid in dying, and end-of-life choices. It approaches these topics with dignity and care, but it may be difficult for some players.
