One man has spent his life preaching Do What Thou Wilt: the supreme sovereignty of the individual self, liberation from every external authority. The other has spent twenty years subordinating his self to a God he no longer believes in.

Across three decades of American upheaval — the Summer of Love, the assassinations of 1968, the Manson contamination, Watergate, the Church schism, the Satanic Panic — one man follows the commandment to its end. The other dies still singing it.
